#New York will erect statues to honour four female historical figures, in the boroughs where they used to live. A statue of world-renowned jazz singer Billie Holiday will be built near Queens Borough Hall. The public health champion Helen Rodríguez Trías will have her statue in the Bronx. A monument to Elizabeth Jennings Graham, a teacher who helped desegregate New York’s public transit, will be installed in Manhattan. Finally, Katherine Walker, a lighthouse keeper credited with saving dozens of lives, will stand on Staten Island. The initiative seeks to fix a gender imbalance in the city’s public spaces, New York having only five female historical figures depicted in statues at present.
