In the UK, more babies have been born to women aged 35 and over than to those under 25 for the first time since records began in 1938. The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that not only are women having children later in life, but fewer women are having children at all, either through choice or circumstance.

  • 6.1 pounds

A man from Gwent in south Wales won an award at the East of England giant vegetable competition for a tomato he grew. Ian Neale, 72, of Langstone, Newport, set a new British record for a tomato which weighed in at 6.1 pounds. On his record, Mr Neale said: “I’m already planning for next year – it’s like running a mile. You do it once and you just want to keep it going.” He now holds four world records, but this labour of love started out as just an activity to keep himself busy. “I spend about 60-80 hours a week tending to my vegetables, and it is great for a retired person like myself,” he said.

More than seven million of the newly counted offences are being committed a year, according to the first official estimates provided by the Office for National Statistics. The ONS said preliminary research indicated there were 5.1 million incidents of fraud, with 3.8 million adult victims in England and Wales in the 12 months prior to being interviewed between May and August. Last month, a former peanut company executive was sentenced to 28 years in prison for his role in a deadly salmonella outbreak, the stiffest punishment ever handed out to a producer in a foodborne illness case. The outbreak in 2008 and 2009 was blamed for nine deaths and sickened hundreds more, and triggered one of the largest food recalls in U.S. history.

  • 2019

Apple Inc has designated building an electric car as a "committed project" and has set a target shipping date for 2019, the Wall Street Journal reported last month. The project has been code-named Titan and its leaders have been given permission to triple the 600-person team, the WSJ said, citing people familiar with the matter. For Apple, a "ship date" doesn’t necessarily mean the date that customers receive a new product; it can also mean the date that engineers sign off on the product’s main features, the WSJ said.

About 150 crocodiles, alligators and caimans are now safe at an animal sanctuary after a Toronto-area man overwhelmed by his reptile collection issued a plea for help. The reptiles, some more than three metres long, had been kept in a home for about 10 years before Bry Loyst of the Indian River Reptile Zoo near Peterborough, Ont., was called in to help. "I couldn't believe what I was seeing," Loyst said. "I could not believe that somebody had that many crocodilians and raised them to adulthood. These were not baby little crocodiles," he said. "They were adults." "Why he wanted that many animals is beyond me," Loyst added.

Uber's dramatic growth in London has seen the number of private hire vehicles on the capital's roads surge by 26pc over the past two years. The arrival in the UK of the car-hailing app jumpstarted the stagnating minicab sector, which had seen the number of private hire vehicles climb by 3pc between 2009 and 2011 and drop by 2pc in the following two years. There are now 62,754 private hire vehicles in London, up from 49,854 in 2013, according to the Department for Transport.

More than 224,000 people cast their ballot in the UK National Bird Vote with robin taking 34%, followed by barn owl and blackbird, at 12% and 11%. Ornithologist David Lindo - who launched the campaign - said the robin was "entwined into our national psyche" as a "Christmas card pin-up". The recently-appointed environment minister, Rory Stewart, said: "The robin is synonymous with the British countryside and I’m delighted that so many people voted in the poll to name it their favourite bird."

  • 10.4%

US inflation rose 0.4% in May, mainly driven by a sharp increase in petrol prices, the US Department of Labor has said. The 10.4% petrol price increase in May was the biggest since June 2009. Core inflation, which strips out food and energy prices, rose 0.1% in the month, according to official figures. Food prices were unchanged for a second month running, but may rise in the coming months after a shortage of eggs in some parts of the country. Over the past 12 months, overall inflation has shown no increase, while core inflation is up 1.7%, both showing modest inflation pressures.
