The British politician revealed he was very proud to be descended from this ancient mummified Swiss woman who died of syphilis. The discovery of head of a sphinx uncovered from beneath the sand dunes of California has blown the dust off one of the greatest stories of extravagance in Hollywood history. On the central California coast, archaeologists have dug up an intact plaster sphinx that was part of an Egyptian movie set built more than 90 years ago for “The Ten Commandments.” The 300-pound sphinx is the second recovered from the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes. The set of the 1923 movie included more than 20 sphinxes. After filming, American director DeMille ordered everything buried in the dunes 175 miles northwest of Los Angeles. They lay undisturbed for decades before recovery efforts began. The newly recovered sphinx is expected to go on display at the dunes museum next summer.

The city has passed a law that allows the police to fine pedestrians up to $35 dollars for staring at their phones while crossing the road. The bill states that “no pedestrian shall cross a street or highway while viewing a mobile electronic device”. “This is really milestone legislation that sets the bar high for safety,” Brandon Elefante, the member of the city council who proposed the bill told the New York Times. In the United States, pedestrian deaths rose 11% in 2016 to nearly 6,000, according to a report from the Governors Highway Safety Association, which cited “an increase in walking as a primary mode of transportation, and distraction due to growing use of smartphone technology” as potential factors for the jump.

The albino doll is part of the Malaville collection which celebrates natural hair and all skin tones. She was created to challenge prejudice and discrimination against albinism. “Teaching children from an early age will help change the views of a new generation for the better; they will then treat people with albinism as equals,” Alexa’s creator Mala Bryan said in an interview with The Huffington Post. Today, people with albinism are still persecuted, hunted down and killed for their body parts in eastern and southern Africa, and children are particularly at risk.

A teen fashion brand thought it was a good idea to put a neon sign in store which read "Send me nudes x". The London store, Missguided, which sells cheap clothes to the teen market, has since taken down the sign after a petition for its removal was signed by more than 8000 people in under 24 hours. A "blueish mass" of 17 contact lenses has been discovered in the eye of a British patient who was scheduled for cataract surgery. The 67-year-old was unaware that the contact lenses were missing, and later told surgeons that she thought her discomfort was due to dry eye and old age. A further 10 individual contact lenses were discovered in the woman's eye after further examination at Solihull Hospital. When the patient was seen two weeks after the lenses were removed, she said her eyes felt a lot more comfortable.

A California burglary suspect has been arrested after police say he left a key piece of evidence at the crime scene when he forgot to flush the toilet. Investigators say Andrew Jensen's sample in the toilet bowl at the home in Los Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks matched DNA on an FBI database. The 42-year-old was arrested on 28 July nearly a year after the residential burglary in October 2016. Police said they collect any type of evidence left behind at crime scenes. Ventura County Sheriff's Office Detective Tim Lohman said the suspect "did his business and didn't flush it". "Most people don't assume or don't know that DNA can be obtained by other things besides hair and saliva," the police detective told BBC News.

Scientists writing in the journal of the American Society for Microbiology recently recommended that parents not discourage children from picking their noses because snot contains a "rich reservoir of good bacteria" beneficial to teeth and overall health. The researchers are even working on a synthetic mucus toothpaste and chewing gum to harness the dental benefits of bogies.
